Flexi-schooling at Inernational School Olomouc. A blended learning approach for the secondary students.
Last year we partnered with Wolsey Hall Oxford to put together a new innovative approach towards learning. Since the beginning of this school year we have started offering a new learning program to a small number of Y9 and Y10 students. What was initially a rather contingency solution put together in order to resolve an issue with student numbers in Y9 may eventually become an excellent opportunity to develop a modern, high quality yet affordable learning program delivering not only the core subject content but also supporting all students in development of their independent learning skills - something they will certainly need in their future life and study.
Excellent online resources, good quality study materials, well qualified tutors and a study manager based in the UK, together with our localized support here at ISO has led to some excellent progress and student outcomes. As an example I would like to reference here the work of one of our students in the Business Studies subject in Y10. This assignment is an end of the module piece of work of a student who joined our school directly into Y10 and for whom English is an additional language. Comparing this with the standard expected from similarly aged students studying at local secondary schools I have to say that this assignment is certainly of high quality and something you might expect from much older students here in the Czech Republic. It also proves that there is a clear focus on understanding and development of subject specific skills. In addition, taking into account that most of the learning included in this assignment has been achieved fairly independently, and without much direct teaching, I believe that there is a great potential in developing the partnership with Wolsey Hall further and to even use the online courses to build a good quality secondary school program.
The most difficult issues to resolve when one wants to develop a new school is always the issue of well qualified staff and an excellent study program that will make a difference for the students enrolled. Thanks to the partnership with Wolsey Hall we are again much closer to our goal of opening a secondary school and providing to local students a study program in English from preschool all to way through to internationally recognized school leaving examinations.
They will gain perfect knowledge of English.
Your child will become a global citizen with wide understanding of local and international topics.
We put a strong emphasis on the development on subject specific skills rather than on acquisition of knowledge.
Emphasis on skills development (not just memorising).
Individual approach; school’s ability to motivate for improvement.
Your child will be excited to come to school.
You are not buying success, you are paying for the school to monitor your child’s progress to their goals and motivate them to fulfil their potential.
We are not a selective school: we believe that everybody can be successful.
Jolly Phonics is an engaging way to teach children pre -reading and pre -writing skills using phonics. Phonics is the teaching of the sounds that letters make, rather than the names of letters that are taught in the alphabet, because it is the sounds that are useful for reading and writing, not the names. These sounds are taught in a systematic way, alongside all of the skills needed for being a fluent reader and writer in future. Jolly Phonics also teaches all of this in a fun and engaging way, through characters, stories, actions, songs and games! To read more about Jolly Phonics, clickhere.
ORT is a reading scheme which has been developed to help children learn to read from the age of 4. This scheme is used by a vast majority of preschools and schools in the UK and around the world.ORT includes popular characters and illustrations such as Biff, Chip and Kipper, Floppy, Wordless Stories and easy regular word books to capture children’s imagination and interest and help them develop their pre reading skills. It is an excellent way to practise the skills learned through the Jolly Phonics Programme..
